How Science & Faith Mix In “Surprised By Meaning”

What gives us meaning? What gives you meaning? I am sure your first answer would not be statistics or science. What drives value and purpose in our lives? “Surprised by Meaning” by Alister E. McGrath argues that very fact; meaning is found not in information, but in faith or another source deep inside the individual.

So, how do we reconcile the facts and data points in our lives and find meaning in it all? McGrath argues that science is great for explanations. Think of science as the “how” behind the world. Faith is the why. Both science and faith are important.

When I say ‘faith’, I do not mean any specific faith. Humans need something to believe in, even if it is Santa. Holding some belief will provide a guiding light for you and your actions. Have faith. Find faith.

Science, on the other hand, gets its value by helping make sense of the world around us. I feel like most people would like to know the ‘how’ behind most things. I know I would.

Understanding the world around us means taking in as much knowledge as we can, forming our own opinions from the knowledge, and repeating the process. But if you are going to learn, the resource had better be worth your time.
